About the Role
This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who can design, build, and operate backend systems at scale while contributing to broader platform architecture. You’ll write clean, performant code, help define standards across testing, delivery, observability, and contracts, and mentor other engineers on the team. The role also calls for strong judgment around AI-assisted development: using AI and agents where they add leverage, knowing when to verify or intervene, and helping the team build the same discipline. It’s a strong fit for someone who enjoys combining hands-on technical execution with architectural leadership, coaching, and close collaboration across technical and non-technical partners.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Develop and deliver clean, maintainable, performant code Help define the architectural strategy for the systems you own and contribute to architectural vision for the platform at large Review code and provide feedback on technical work on the team Build services and tooling to streamline the development process Work fluidly across the human-AI spectrum — from AI-assisted coding to delegating multi-step tasks to AI agents — and know when to steer, when to verify, and when to take back control; help the team develop that same judgment Mentor and coach less experienced engineers on the team Help define standards and best practices on your team for testing, software delivery, observability, contract definition, and so on Participate in sprint-related meetings such as standup, grooming, retrospective, and roadmap replenishment Encourage a culture of experimentation, prototyping and brainstorming across technical teams Provide consultation for non-technical teammates and clarity around technical decisions Advocate for new technology and design patterns where you believe they can help power the business Advocate for flexible, domain-driven solutions that balance expediency with long-term flexibility
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field is preferred Six+ years of experience as a software engineer, building and operating production systems at scale You have a lot of experience with Java or Python or similar languages Experience with ecommerce is a big plus Experience with billing and fulfillment systems is a big plus Some experience with React is a plus
Things you’ve done: You love to design, build, and operate domain-driven backend systems at scale You’ve worked in agile-ish systems, kanban systems, and more importantly hybrid systems You’re good at demystifying complex technical concepts for laymen and love to simplify complex ideas for curious teammates Automation has become a core value for you, and your systems can operate in production for long periods without human intervention You already can’t live without continuous delivery and know how to drive towards small, frequent deployments You know how to tune up observability up and down the stack You know how to find the growth edge for people on your team, including your own You treat AI as a collaborator you can critically evaluate, not just a generator you accept output from — your review of AI-produced code is as rigorous as your review of a colleague’s PR You have hands-on experience building with LLMs or AI agents — you understand where to keep humans in the loop, what failure modes to design for, and how to structure tasks so AI can operate reliably within them You’ve helped a team level up their AI fluency — not just by sharing tools, but by modeling the judgment of when to trust AI output, when to question it, and when the right answer is to do it yourself
